as part of our homeschooling, i do a little "cooking class" with the kids every week. they do pretty much everything by themselves and it's quickly become one of their favorite days! this week we made soft pretzels and they were such a hit they were all gone by bedtime. akemi is in this phase where she just likes adding things to her dough so we gave her a little dough and she played with it for an hour adding tons of flour and salt... cutie! this is a super easy recipe and fun to do with little ones.
4 tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp honey
1 1/4 cups warm water
5 cups flour
1/4 cup honey
1 tsp salt
1 tbs oil
1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup baking soda
4 cups warm water
dissolve 1 tsp honey in 1 1/4 cups warm water and stir in yeast. let sit 5 minutes or until yeast is foamy.
in large bowl, mix flour and salt. make well in middle of flour and pour in yeast mixture, 1/4 cup honey, and 1 tbs oil. Mix slightly and add additional 1/2 cup warm water. Stir until mixed and then knead for several minutes or until sticky dough is formed.
remove dough and oil bowl. place dough back in oiled bowl and cover with towel. let rise in warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.
preheat oven to 450 degrees. in large bowl, mix 1/2 cup baking soda and 4 cups warm water and set aside.
punch dough down and turn onto lightly floured surface. divide dough in half and each half into 6 - 8 balls (8 pieces makes a good size for kids). roll each piece into a long rope and shape into a pretzel. dip pretzels in baking soda solution and place on greased cookie sheet. bake for 8 minutes or until golden brown. immediately brush with butter and sprinkle with sea salt.
