why homeschooling is awesome

So I'll be honest, this is a post I've thought about writing a million times... I have so many thoughts (oh so many thoughts) on how amazing homeschooling is, but I never want to sound pompous about the whole thing, you know? Yes, it's so awesome, but it's not for everyone. I totally get that. There are hundreds of ways to educate your children and everyone has to decide what works for their own family. In general, these weighty decisions fall on us parents.

We've been homeschooling for several years now and I will certainly never tell you that it's easy. I think I questioned our decision every single day the entire first year because as a parent, somehow you want that assurance that you're doing everything right and your kids will turn out perfect and everyone will be happy and successful and make the world a better place. That would be so great. But you don't get that assurance, really, with any type of education. We have friends who've chosen all forms of schooling for their children and there are pros and cons for all of us. You just kind of have to try something and if it doesn't work for you, try something else.

Well, for us, homeschooling just clicks.

It's taken a few years to really find our education style (oh the hours spent pouring over curriculum choices!) but I guess I feel lucky that we both just knew early on in having our babies that we would love to homeschool them. We don't do it because we're against other forms of education, but more  because we're for everything homeschooling has to offer. Because it's a good fit for our family. Because it's a good fit for our kids.

I read this article recently about a man traveling the world with his kids and I love the part where he says "I discovered that in addition to loving my children, I actually like them as well." That's exactly how I feel. Even though homeschooling is a lot of work and there are certainly days where running errands or scheduling appointments would be easier if they were all in school somewhere, I find tremendous joy in spending my days with my kids and I'm so thankful we've been able to raise them this way. For me, there are just so many perks of homeschooling!

like not having to have all four kids dressed and out the door at 7am (I will shamelessly admit, sleeping in is a fantastic perk of homeschooling)

or being able to take time off whenever we need or want to (no worrying about snow days or sick days!)

spending hours at the parks, zoos, museums, etc during school hours when they're less crowded

having art and nature take up over half of our homeschool time (I love love love this)

getting to see the kids chase their passions at an early age

having more time for play

seeing the older ones teach the younger ones (melt my heart)

baking cookies together at 10 in the morning

nature walks

long afternoons at the beach

chocolate factory tours

having all the time we want to cuddle and read in bed

not having to worry about peer pressure and everything else that comes with attending large schools (I went to public school and let me tell you all the extra stuff I learned by 2nd grade)

getting to focus on God and his purpose for our lives

more time for volunteer work (there are so many opportunities for kids to be involved...from nature conservation to helping the homeless to working in our parish, even just helping Grandma put away groceries, our kids love working for good)

cultivating strong family relationships

not having to rush through our days (literally having time to smell the roses... and plant them and paint watercolors of them and pick them to give to friends)

I love these things.

They make my heart full and happy and give me strength when things get a little challenging (because we all have those days!).

These little, dreamy moments make it all so worthwhile.

not to mention never having to wake a napping baby for afternoon school pick up time!

These are a few of the things that, for me, make homeschooling so awesome.
